I think the main damage done by Camping and his followers is that they gave further reason for the world to scoff at the very idea that there is an "end of the world." They further hardened the hearts of those who already think the idea of Jesus' second coming ridiculous.
Make no mistake about it. Jesus will come. The world as we know it will end. There is a coming day of judgment. And that we have no idea when it will be, makes it no less certain that it will happen.
In fact, we are told why Jesus has not yet come. The Bible tells us why Jesus did not return yesterday.
2 Peter 3:9: "The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance."
The Lord is being patient. He desires for you to come to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

I saw the picture at the start of this blog post and it immediatly got me angry... finally I thought, I have found someone who actually believed this nutter, and I was ready to pounce...
thankfully I read your article first. Followers of Camping are thin on the ground in Scotland - in fact I have not actually met one yet... I imagine in light of his clear error they will be harder to spot now than ever...
I like your blog, and I like what you have to say.... I will become a follower of your blog shortly...
I essentially think that Camping guy is a bit mental, and has done some serious damage to the credibility of the established church/Christians - I have been tarred with his brush by many people who half know me at work etc. I am starting to get fed up explaining why he is a crazy and why I am not!
Anyhoo... thanks for taking the time to blog. I am on the hunt for good Christian blogs - I will add you to my list!
