I was working on a sermon about the Trinity in John's Gospel and just don't have enough Sundays to preach it. This was going to be my basic outline:
The Trinity in John’s Gospel:
1. The Father gave His people to the Son whom He has sent into the world.
-The Father is the Grand Architect, the Wise Designer of redemption.
-John 6:37-40; 10:29; 17:2, 6, 9, 24.
-Jesus as “sent” by the Father about 36 times in John (i.e. John 3:16).
2. The Son obeyed the Father by giving life to those given to Him by the Father.
-People (sheep) were not the only thing given to the Son by the Father (the cup – 18:11).
-Jesus’ relentless passion to please the Father (for more see this post).
-Jesus will continue to obey the Father by protecting His people.
3. The Spirit is given by the Father and Son in order to guide His people into the truth.
-The Spirit serves the church by guiding her to the truth and glorifying Jesus.
-For more on the Sprit in John see this post.
The progression of redemption:
-The Father has chosen a group of people.
-The Father sent the Son and entrusted His people to the Son.
-The Son obeyed the Father by redeeming His people.
-The Son will continue to obey the Father by protecting His people.
-The Father and Son sent the Spirit in order to guide His people into the truth.
-His people are to live fruitful lives awaiting Christ’s return for the glory of God.

you forgot to note that the Son is Creator (john 1:3), therefore equal with the Father. the theme picks back up in john 14, where Jesus is going to "prepare" a place for the disciples.
1:1 points out that the Word is divine, i.e. of the same essence (equal) to the Father (literally "and the Word was God" (no article on theos, which comes first in the Greek, meaning the Word, which does have the article, is of the exact same essence of God])
also, it seems in one sense that God not only gave His people to His Son, but also gave His Son to and for the world (John 3) out of love for the world
yeah, if anything, in John's gospel love for the world is a huge factor that you haven't really touched on here.
i like what you pointed out about Jesus being "sent." messengers were sent, and Jesus (the Word, i.e. message and more) is the only one who truly reveals the Father (why? because "i and my father are one" and the many "i am" statements). the Spirit, likewise, will do more than help and comfort; He will do those things so the disciples will be able to bear witness and give testimony (easier to see in the Greek of John 14 & 16), i.e. be messengers, of the messenger par excellence, Christ, who is also the message (logos/word).
Jesus, i.e. God, is the ultimate witness and messenger, but also the message itself. the Spirit, i.e. God, will bear witness to the message through conviction, but also by empowering human messengers to continue on even when persecution makes it tough. disciples, i.e. those not God, are called to be messengers, but God will have to empower them to do so.
okay, the coffee coursing through my veins has erupted a little. good discussion
I am looking forward to this sermon and just print out this.
I still got a lot to learn!
Thank you for preaching His Word!
Hungry to eat His Word!
