Think Deeply: The Local Church

Help me to think Biblically about my responsibility to the local church. What Biblical commands or implications are there for how a Christian is to relate to the local church? Please share as many as you can think of.

I'll get us started:
1. Christians are to make their pastor's job a joy (Heb. 13:17, 1 Thes. 5:12-13, 1 Tim. 5:17).

Because of your gifting and office, you are to equip the sainst for the work of service for the building up of the body of Christ. You are to do Col. 3:16..."Let the word dwell in you richly...", There are sharper theologians than me that will continue this list very well and as I think of more I'll send them- Great questions for us as believers to consider!!!!!

We should come together in unity and leave our anger at each other or controversy at the sanctuary door.
"So whenever you assemble, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy." I Timothy 2:8

Secondly, the women should check ourselves at the sanctuary door to earnestly evaluate our modesty of heart and appearance.
"And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes." I Timothy 2:9

Shannon, could we summarize yours further to: Prepare yourself before meeting with the church?

Maybe I'm just being the master of the obvious -- but I believe one of the primary responsibilities is to simply "come to church": "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25, NKJV)
Then when we come - I agree with Shannon that we are to come together in unity HOWEVER - it's not because we leave our anger at the door of the sanctuary but because we have obeyed the Scriptural commands of: "Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." (Matthew 5:23-24, NKJV)
AND "“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”" (Mark 11:25-26, NKJV)
I will be preaching on the Doctrine of the Church over multiple Sundays beginning in June - so I email me your notes and I will download your sermon!

Together for the Gospel,
Clif

Clif,

Great words on reconciliation. Community is one of the buzz words of the day. Oh that it would be more than a buzz word and God's people would take seriously that we are members of one body and we come together before Holy God.
