Here is a description of one church's desire for a pastor. I desperately want to be a pastor like this.
We are seeking a man of God and a servant of Christ to serve as our pastor-teacher. Having been saved by grace through faith, he must love the Lord and love His church. He must be passionately committed to the Great Commission as the driving purpose of the church.
We seek both a scholar and shepherd. He must be a man with a heart for God’s Word. He must believe the Bible is the very Word of God written. He must be a devoted learner of truth, and devoutly obedient to the truth he learns. He must be conversant with the biblical languages, a capable exegete, able to preach and teach. He must be a man with a heart for God’s people. He must have an ear to listen, sensitivity to empathize, compassion to comfort, wisdom to counsel, discernment to warn, courage to challenge, vision to lead, patience to wait, and love to persevere.
He will be a man full of the Holy Spirit and faith. He will know Christ well and hunger to know Him better. He will have the capability of inspiring others passionately to pursue God and His kingdom cause to His glory.
Having said all that, let us ease the trepidation of this daunting description. We are not looking for a pastor who has it all together and has all the answers. We seek a disciple who will join the journey with us. We desire a man who will sit with us at the feet of Jesus and learn; who will humbly kneel with us at the foot of the cross and pray; who will climb the mountain and walk the valley together with us; who will play with us in the pasture and labor with us in the field; who will weep with us at the tomb; who will wait with us in the dark; who will share our joys and his, as we exalt His name together.
