The Redeemer is Reviled

Matthew 26:67-68:
Then, they spit in his face, and struck him. And some slapped him, saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?"

The irony of our Savior's suffering. Those mocking Him thought they were being funny. Whoever said, "Who is it that struck you?" probably got a ton of laughs from his friends.

The Savior knew who hit Him. Jesus knew who spit in His face. The Redeemer knew the hand that slapped His face.

Ultimately, it was not the hand of a Jewish religious leader. Ultimately, it was not the hand of a Roman soldier. Ultimately, it was not a demonic hand that hit Him.

The beloved Son knew that it was the hand of the Father who hit Him. It was the Father who crushed Him. It was the Father who bruised Him and brought on Him this grief.

(Inspired by chapter 8 of The Cross He Bore.)
