Think Deeply: The Da Vinci Code

I hate that this movie is coming out in about a month. However, as Christians, we must ask some questions:

1. Will I go see the movie at the theatre? Or, will I wait to rent it on DVD? Will I see it at all?
2. Will I do specific study related to the movie to be better prepared to deal with its claims?
3. Will I seek to use the movie as an evangelistic tool with my family and friends?
4. Will I just ignore it all?

I would love to hear your thoughtful answers to these questions as I prepare my own answers.

I'm probably going to go see this movie, and here's why: About 60-70% of my church body didn't grow up in church. Most of them have just recently become Christians, so they have questions about everything. We also have a good portion of non-believers and visitors. A lot of these will go and see the movie and probably ask quite a few questions about it. Now, I obviously know that this movie is not "Jesus-honoring" in any way, but I feel it might serve my church better for me to know at least a little of what's going on. A couple of years ago, when the book was really huge, my pastor actually did a 2 week message on debunking the da vinci code. That's just where my church is. They ask questions about the da vinci code, about harry potter, about the differences between mormonism and Christianity. Not once in the near 3 years that I've been here has one person ever asked me about Calvinism. It's more like, "explain this Trinity thing again for me". It's actually quite refreshing!

I don't know, Justin. Part of me wants to ignore it, and part of me wants to go see another movie on that day.

Ignoring it seems unbiblical to me. As Christians, we are called to "speak the truth in love" and "expose the darkness." That just can't be done when we are not willing to carve out time to see something making waves in the media and be prepared to give an answer and be the "salty" influence we ought to be.

On the other hand, one of the most effective ways we can "stand against" this movie is by showing that we don't care and going to see another movie instead. Did you see Justin Taylor's blog on this? If not, you should go there and check it out.

Let me clarify - what I mean by ignoring the movie is not taking any steps at all to take a stand.

Yes, I saw the post by Justin Taylor and commented on it. Here is the address:

I did not totally agree with the article. I honestly do not care one bit about what Hollywood learns from the box office. The movie is going to be a huge hit and Hollywood will continue to use controversy and religion to make money. I am much more concerned with how this IS going to shake people's faith.

I'm planning to go see it as soon as I can. And, I'm planning to do a 2 or 3 week series with my students about it. I am hoping to give them a rock-solid confidence in the trustworthiness of the Bible and of the diety of Christ before the movie even comes out. I think it is my responsibility (under their parents) to equip them to deal with the questions the movie will raise.

I will have to be honest....I have heard very little about the movie or the book, so I guess it would be good to go and see it so that if I am asked- I will know 1. what they are talking about and 2. how to defend it biblically.......but I had to be honest!

hmmm. but then again, I went and saw "The passion of the Christ" and I wish I hadn't. I left feeling so dissapointed and have not had conversations with anyone about it.....except a few christians who loved it.....(I may get into trouble from this comment) but then again I am not shepherding a flock- whom I would have to give councel on the movie....so I dont know....good thing I have a wonderful husband who gets to choose!!!!!

First, I can not in any way help you with the links- I will be doing good if I spell all of these words right, Justin. Second, as many of the students to whom I will speak this summer will have seen the movie or read the book, I will be ready to interact with them concerning them both. At the study I do at UMHB- the next couple of weeks I will be talking about the Gospel and one thing I will be sure to make clear is that the Gospel is good news, therefore the gnostics do not work. They, not to bring up your favorite boy band or anything, are not INSYNC with the Scriptures, which are unified in the good news of the Gospel. The biggest point I want to make about the movie, or the book is that both are fiction. And fiction isn't certain of anything.

Just found out last night, the night that the Da vinci code comes out- our church is showing a movie called "The Da Vinci Code deception". It is supposed to show all of the error in the movie and combat it with truth....so thats pretty cool, I wont have to actually go and sit through the movie!!!!! Plus I get to be with my church family!
