Your Advice

Let's enter the dream world for a moment. Suppose a friend of yours is going on a 2 year vacation. Among other things, this friend is planning to devote a good amount of time to reading good books. This friend has never read any Christian books other than the Bible. Which 5 books other than the Bible would you recommend for their careful contemplation?

My list would seek to be balanced between several different authors and purposes:

1. Desiring God by Piper
2. Bible Doctrine by Grudem
3. John G. Paton, an autobiogrphy
4. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Whitney
5. Living the Cross-Centered Life by Mahaney

Hard to leave out (with explanations of why I left them out):
6. Knowing God by Packer (Grudem has sections on the attributes of God)
7. Pleasures of God by Piper (already have one book by Piper)
8. Let the Nations Be Glad by Piper (already have a Piper book)
9. Humility by Mahaney (already have a Mahaney book)

1. Pleasures of God - Piper
2. Easy Chairs Hard Words - Douglas Wilson
3. Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God - Packer
4. The Mortification of Sin - John Owen
5. Desiring God - Piper
6. Systematic Theology - Wayne Grudem

I couldn't get rid of any of these. I'll have to stay with 6.

Blake, I will have to admit I have never heard of the Wilson book. I just went to Amazon and checked out the summary. It sounds like one I should get. Thanks.

well, if this friend were a woman (LOL)or a man with a wife tagging along, I would recommend:

1. The attributes of God-A.W.Pink (changed my life!!!)
2. The Excellent Wife- Martha Peace
3. Lies Women believe-Nancy Leigh Demoss
4. Feminine Appeal- Carolyn Mahaney
5. anything by Carol Ruvolo
6. anything by Elizabeth George
7. Shepherding a child's heart

also take along the valley of vision- to help with prayer.

those are all my fav's anyways.

Must add another....my best friend just moved to England for 2 years(not for vacation though) I would also recommend "Trusting God" by Bridges!

Great lists, I don't have much to add to this- I might put The Cost of Discipleship, or Foxe's Book of Martyrs, but Piper's chapter on suffering in "the nations"- might cover it. I may throw in something else later

Who wrote Cost of discipleship? That sounds really good! There are sooo many books that Id like to read.....but I had to narrow my topics down to five...and discipleship is one of them!!!

My Top Five are (in no particular order)

1. Pleasures of God by Piper
2. Desiring God by Piper
3. Holiness by J.C. Ryle
4. Knowing God by Packer
5. The Cross of Christ by John Stott

These are the books I return to over and over again, along with Shadow of the Almighty.

Justin,
You will love Wison's book. It is short too. It is a conversation between a young hungry believer asking hard questions to an older reformed pastor. He uses some great analogies. Very solid!

Yeah- the The Stott Book and ELliot have to be there too. Look- if this friend is really going to devote a "good amount of time to reading books" 5 is too small a number.
