The GREAT Exchange is a great book. Bridges points out something that I had never connected before. In a short section on the reality of Christ becoming a curse for us (Gal. 3:10-14), he makes the connection with the first sin of Adam. Of course, he also points to the Biblical connection with Deut. 21:22-23 ("Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree").
Sin entered the world through Adam's sin. God gave one stipulation on Adam and Eve's rule over the garden. They were not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They doubted God's goodness and disobeyed, subjecting the entire human race into sin. Sin entered the world in connection with a tree.
In God's kindness, sin was punished on another tree: the cross of Christ.
"He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree" (1 Peter 2:24). Hallelujah, What a Savior!
