Hope for Ordinary Pastors and Church Members

By far the most encouraging nugget I received at T4G this week was a Spurgeon quote given by CJ Mahaney. CJ knows how to serve the ordinary pastor. He was concerned that we would be discouraged that we cannot preach the gospel like Piper, Sproul, and MacArthur.

The way I wrote the quote down was this:
"Whitefield and Wesley might preach the gospel better, but they cannot preach a better gospel."

Take a moment after reading that.

If you are reading this blog, chances are that your pastor is not George Whitefield, John Wesley, or Charles Spurgeon. You probably have an average, rather ordinary pastor.
Hopefully, your pastor preaches the gospel. The gospel is anything but average and ordinary. The gospel is extraordinary, powerful, life-altering, cleansing, and energizing.

Prepare your heart to hear THE GOSPEL this Sunday, proclaimed by a man who cares deeply about your soul, even if his gifting is below average.

Excellent quote. Your expanded comment is right on target as well.

I know I have been guilty of this in the past, even recently. I listen to podcasts of Piper, or Sproul, or whoever and become discontented with the preaching in my home church.

But you are right. I know my pastor. He does care deeply for the souls of those he shepherds. I have been meditating on Colossians 1 and amazed by Paul's thankfulness for the Colossians, in spite of their theological errors. Hs thankfulness stems from knowledge of their faith in Christ and love for the saints. I've been convicted in my own spirit that I need to express thanksgiving and joy that God has blessed me with a shepherd who loves Christ and loves me. What a blessing!

And as I pastor the youth, it encourages me that I don't have to be Piper or Spurgeon. I just have to be faithful to the gospel and love the kids given into my care. What a relief!

I personally believe that you are a very gifted and gospel saturated preacher. I am blessed to be married to you and to be in a church where my pastor preaches the gospel every Sunday. I love you babe!
