Reflections on Turning 33

1. Jesus died for my sins when He was about 33 years old. What a Savior!
2. I’m officially getting old. I can remember when 33 sounded ancient.
3. If God allows me to live a long life, I’ve still got most of my life ahead of me.
4. I’ve now been a follower of Christ the majority of my life. God opened my heart when I was 16 years old.
5. My wife amazes me more and more as the years go by. There’s no one I’d rather grow old with than her.
6. I love being a dad. I don’t want to waste these most important years of my kids’ lives.
7. I was made to preach the Bible. I can’t believe I get paid to do what God has called me to do.
8. I’m praying that the fruitfulness of these next 33 years will be 100 times that of the past 33. I want to be used to the max for the glory of God.
9. There’s no more “one day I’ll…” Now is the time. Today is the day.
10. I should know more about God and the Bible than I do. I have wasted too much precious time.
11. I am a dependent man. My life can be traced through the influence of so many people. All I can say is, “thank you.”

On Turning 30

Tomorrow, Saturday, I will turn (gulp) 30 years old.

30 feels old. It has come fast. Before I know it, I will be celebrating my 60th birthday. Life is short.

Some random reflections on my 30th birthday:

1. Jesus began His ministry at 30. There must be some significance that He chose this age to go public. What incredible patience He displayed those years leading up to his public ministry. Why did He not just burst on the scene when He was 21? He was relentlessly committed to The Father's plan and The Father's time.

2. David Brainerd never saw age 30. He has had an incalculable impact on world missions and on countless Christians through the years, and he never celebrated his 30th birthday. Surely this testifies to what God can do with a heart devoted to the Kingdom.

3. All the "I'll wait till I grow up to do that" excuses are gone at age 30.

4. God has been kind and patient with me. He saved me when I was 16 and has continued His good work in me for these 14 years. I have not arrived. I have much to learn and much to repent of. The gospel grows sweeter in my affections as the years go by.

5. A dose of real life: I've got to mow the lawn on my birthday (although my wonderful wife did mow the front lawn for me!).

Birthday Memories

When I was growing up, my mom made birthdays a huge event. Among other things, we would get to eat our meal of choice off the "special" plate.
Here is what I wrote in my journal 4 years ago:
4-12-03
I’m 25 years old today. Birthdays (like New Year’s Day) have a way of reminding me that life is short. 25 seems old to me right now, but soon (if God wills) I will be 35, 45, 85. I’m also reminded of the faithfulness of God. He has been good and He has blessed me beyond measure. I’m committing myself to Him again today. Lord, I bring myself and all that I have to your feet. I only ask that you allow me to be spent for Your Kingdom in the next days.
Last night, a friend and I visited a Jewish synagogue. It was very interesting. About 90% of the service was in Hebrew. It renewed my passion to learn Hebrew. They talked about the upcoming Passover week. I wanted to stand up and shout, “The Passover Lamb has been slain! The Messiah has come!” I probably should have done so. Lord, give me a radical spirit that calls people to you.
